Popping
Popping developed in California in the 1970s, growing out of boogaloo, and is closely tied to Fresno, where the brothers Boogaloo Sam and Popin' Pete formed the Electric Boogaloos in 1977. The crew gained national attention after appearing on Soul Train in 1979.
The core technique is a quick contraction and release of muscles that produces a jerk, called a pop or a hit, which can be isolated in the arms, legs, chest or neck. Poppers usually dance to 4/4 music at about 90 to 120 beats per minute with a strong backbeat, at first funk and disco, later electro and hip-hop.
