Locking
Locking is a funk dance created around 1970 in Los Angeles by Don Campbell. While trying a step called the Robot Shuffle he froze unexpectedly, and he turned that sudden pause into a signature move. The style was first called the Campbellock; in 1974 the name was shortened to locking to settle a dispute with a record company.
Campbell appeared on the television show Soul Train from 1971, and in 1973 a troupe that became The Lockers formed around him. The style is built on sharp locks, held poses and moves such as the knee drop and the pimp walk, danced mainly to funk. Today it is a standard category at street-dance events such as Juste Debout and Summer Dance Forever.
