Hip-hop new style
Hip-hop new style is the studio-based branch of hip-hop dance. Where the older street styles were improvised in crews and in outdoor spaces, new style joins hip-hop foundations to choreography and studio technique, with hard-hitting moves, isolations and flexibility, and it is the form most often seen in music videos and stage shows.
It is organised mainly through competitions and training bodies. Hip Hop International stages the World Hip Hop Dance Championship, which it says drew more than 4,000 dancers to Phoenix in 2019. UDO runs street-dance championships and an accredited syllabus, Juste Debout has a Hip-Hop Newstyle category, and New York's Hip-Hop Dance Conservatory offers professional training.
