Breaking

Breaking took shape in the Bronx, New York, in the 1970s among African American and Latino young people. DJ Kool Herc's extended instrumental breaks gave dancers room to perform, and they became known as b-boys and b-girls. Dancers take turns in a cypher or face off in battles, usually to funk, soul and hip-hop breakbeats.

A routine combines toprock, floor footwork, power moves such as windmills and flares, and freezes. After touring and film exposure in the 1980s, breaking grew into a worldwide competition scene, with Battle of the Year held since 1990 and Red Bull BC One since 2004. It made its Olympic debut at the Paris 2024 Games.
