Forró
Forró is a family of music and dance traditions of Brazil's Northeast, developed from the nineteenth century in the countryside and on the outskirts of cities in states such as Bahia, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte and Alagoas. The core ensemble is accordion, zabumba drum and metal triangle, a trio format shaped by Luiz Gonzaga, who made the baião a more sophisticated rhythm.
Dances include the slower xote, the baião and the fast arrasta-pé, and the so-called university forró of the Southeast has absorbed influences from salsa and samba-rock. In December 2021 Iphan registered the Traditional Matrices of Forró as Brazilian cultural heritage, after a request made in 2011 by the Associação Cultural Balaio Nordeste and the Fórum Forró de Raiz da Paraíba. Forró festivals now take place in many countries.
