Kolo
Kolo is a collective folk dance of Serbia, performed by dancers linked in a chain, usually moving in a circle with hands held down, to musical accompaniment. It is danced at private and public gatherings by people of all ages and social groups, in villages and cities. The oldest documented versions, moravac and kukunješ, come from central Serbia in the mid-nineteenth century.
Kolo is widely seen as a marker of Serbian national identity, especially among the Serbian Orthodox community, but other ethnic and religious groups dance it too. Similar circle dances exist in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, often with accordion music. UNESCO inscribed the Serbian kolo on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017, and it continues among diaspora communities.
