Flamenco
Flamenco is an art of Andalusia in southern Spain, with roots also in Murcia and Extremadura, combining song (cante), dance (baile) and guitar playing (toque). UNESCO inscribed it in 2010. The Gitano (Roma) community played an essential part in its growth; the earliest recorded mention dates from 1774, and the modern art form took shape in late eighteenth-century Andalusia.
Flamenco is organised into more than fifty palos (styles) that differ in rhythm, mode and origin; its most characteristic rhythmic cycle has twelve beats. Dance forms vary by palo. It is performed at festivals, religious events and private celebrations, passed on through families, clubs and conservatories, and showcased at events such as the Festival de Jerez.
