Judson Dance Theater (postmodern dance)
Judson Dance Theater was organised in 1962 as workshops and concerts at Judson Memorial Church, a Protestant congregation in Greenwich Village, New York. It grew out of Robert Dunn's composition class, and its artists included Yvonne Rainer, Steve Paxton, Trisha Brown, Lucinda Childs and David Gordon, working alongside visual artists such as Robert Rauschenberg.
The artists treated everyday movement such as walking and sitting as dance, shared roles within the group and welcomed trained and untrained performers. Their work is seen as a root of postmodern dance and led to later forms such as contact improvisation. MoMA presented an exhibition on Judson from September 2018 to February 2019, and Danspace Project marked the fiftieth anniversary in 2012.
