Hamburg Ballet and John Neumeier's literary ballet
John Neumeier, born in Milwaukee in 1939, became ballet director of the Hamburg State Opera in 1973 and led the Hamburg Ballet until 2024. He created more than 170 works, many of them narrative ballets drawn from literature, including A Midsummer Night's Dream (1977), The Seagull (2002) and Anna Karenina (2017).
The School of the Hamburg Ballet was established in 1978, and the annual Hamburg Ballet Days festival, held since 1975, ends the season with the Nijinsky Gala. The John Neumeier Foundation keeps a combined art collection, library and archive on the history of dance and ballet, and plans to open it more widely to the public.
