Nederlands Dans Theater and Jiří Kylián

Nederlands Dans Theater was founded in The Hague in 1959 with dancers from the Dutch National Ballet, and it mixes classical technique with influences from American modern dance. Jiří Kylián, born in Prague in 1947 and a former dancer of John Cranko's Stuttgart Ballet, became its artistic director in 1975 and led it until 1999.

Kylián created about 100 works, including Sinfonietta (1978), the piece that established NDT internationally, Forgotten Land and Zugvögel. He founded NDT II for young dancers in 1978 and NDT III for dancers over forty in 1991; NDT III closed in 2006. The Kylián Foundation, set up in 1988, safeguards his choreography. NDT is now based in the Amare building in The Hague.
