Ballett Frankfurt and William Forsythe
William Forsythe, born in New York in 1949, directed Ballett Frankfurt from 1984 to 2004 and then led The Forsythe Company from 2005 to 2015. He is known for taking classical ballet apart, bending and breaking its rules through unconventional footwear, counterbalanced partnering, flexible timing and dancers' autonomous decisions.
Notable works include In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated (1987), commissioned by Rudolf Nureyev, and One Flat Thing, reproduced (2000); they are performed by classical companies such as New York City Ballet and the Royal Ballet. Forsythe also created Improvisation Technologies, a digital tool for analysing movement through ballet's geometry, and the research platform Motion Bank. He received the 2024 Kyoto Prize.
