Eifman's psychological ballet
Boris Eifman, born in 1946 in Rubtsovsk, Siberia, graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory in 1972, worked as a ballet master at the Vaganova Academy and in 1977 founded his own company in Leningrad, today the St. Petersburg State Ballet Theatre of Boris Eifman. From the start it was conceived as an experimental laboratory, a ballet theatre of one choreographer.
Eifman's productions, often called psychological ballet, draw on Russian psychological theatre and literature; examples are Red Giselle (1997), Anna Karenina (2005) and Onegin (2009). The company first toured abroad in Paris in 1989 and appeared in the United States in 1998. The Boris Eifman Dance Academy opened in St. Petersburg in 2013.
