Stuttgart Ballet and John Cranko's dramatic ballet
John Cranko (1927-1973), a British choreographer born in South Africa, became director of the Stuttgart Ballet in 1961 and led it until his death in 1973. He raised the company's technical standards and built a cohesive ensemble; its first American tour in 1969 brought it wide international attention, an episode often called the Stuttgart ballet miracle.
His signature works are full-length narrative ballets, including Romeo and Juliet (1962), Onegin (1965) and The Taming of the Shrew (1969), which later entered the repertoires of companies worldwide. The John Cranko School, opened in Stuttgart on 1 December 1971, trains young dancers in close contact with the company.
