Chicago footwork

Footwork began on Chicago's West Side in the 1980s as an improvised battle dance to house music, and spread across the city during the 1990s. Dancers move their feet very fast and intricately with little upper-body motion, often battling in a circle. The holy ghost is described as a foundational move; the erk and jerk is another well-known one.

A faster music style grew from ghetto house in the late 1990s and early 2000s, usually around 150 to 165 beats per minute; RP Boo, DJ Rashad, DJ Clent and DJ Spinn are named among its pioneers. The scene reached Europe, Japan and Latin America in the following years. The Era Footwork Crew, described as tradition-bearers, teaches footwork in Chicago Public Schools and runs a youth summer camp.
