Vaganova method

The Vaganova method is the teaching system of Agrippina Vaganova (1879–1951), a Russian dancer who turned to teaching before the 1917 revolution and, from 1921 until her death, trained senior students at the Leningrad school in St Petersburg. It is described as blending the French tradition with Italian virtuosity, aiming at clean technique, expressive arms and a supple upper body.

Her book Basic Principles of Classical Ballet appeared in 1934 and is still a standard text. The school, renamed in her honour in 1957, is today the Vaganova Ballet Academy and traces its origin to the imperial school of 1738. The method is the main system in Russia and is also used in Ukraine, Germany and China.
