English style of ballet (Royal Academy of Dance)
The English style of ballet took shape in the twentieth century around the Royal Academy of Dance, founded in London in 1920 by dance professionals including Adeline Genée, Phyllis Bedells and Tamara Karsavina. Its method merges teaching traditions from Italy, France, Denmark and Russia into a single graded syllabus.
The RAD received a Royal Charter in 1935 and is now headquartered in Battersea, London. It runs graded examinations from Grade 1 to Grade 8 and a vocational graded syllabus for aspiring professionals, and operates in more than 80 countries. Britain's national ballet company, the Royal Ballet, is based at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.
